O: Dr. Ohmae
P: Mr. Phil Knight (NIKE)
O: Welcome, Phil...
P: Thank you.
O: ... to this studio of Business Breakthrough.
P: Very nice to be here, thank you.
O: Yes. Well, you are known in Japan... very well as an entrepreneur who... is willing to take risks. And... and most of the viewers today are probably interested in where you acquire this skill and, you know, how this all come about.
P: Well, I think, to some extent, that... entrepreneur-ists are born, not made, to the extent, that they have an inclination to... wanna be in charge, and would rather be in charge of small operation than be a minor fun... functionary in a larger organization. And I think they're willing to take those risks. I think that basically... if you have sort of bent... then it can be encouraged and... and helped by education and by inspirational teachers, such as yourself, or some other teachers that I had at Stanford University...
O: Right.
P: ... but, I do think uh... it's a... it's a different type of personality that wants to be an entrepreneur then wants to be a general manager of a large company.
O: Um... and you can tell those traits early on in the game...
P: I just think it comes from the person and I think the person has to decide what he wants to be. And... and I think, you know, to a very large extent, and I think it... it gets to be sort of patters in generations. Uh... in my own... my own uh..., you know, impression is that, in the United States, we're developing now college graduates that are not prone to taking risks.
They're really not the entrepreneurial type of personality. And I think that's a product of the upbringing as well as the type of personality.
But, the person has to decide... what he wants to do and, you know, when I went to my first class on entrepreneurship, I said, “that's me”. And... and...
O: Hahahaha.
P: ... and they describe me. That's who I am. That's what I wanna do, ... yeah.
O: Oh, I see, yeah...
