Course Outline/Objectives

When it comes to organizational theory, people tend to focus on "hardware", such as the form or structure of an organization. Yet, what decides the functioning of an organization is not the hardware but rather the software. The strength of Japanese companies is based on uniquely structural software. However, with a trend of short-sighted rationalizing, the power of its software has declined. This trend is often the source of scandals and product failure these days. In this course, we will consider what the essential problems for companies are in relation to organizational theory, and we consider how to revitalize the software of an organizational structure. In order to do this, we will focus closely on the software of an organization.

Three elements of structural software

Organizational software comprises of many types of software. In this course, we will concentrate on 3 elements:

  • Having a common world of meaning in the organization (corporate culture and communication)
  • Knowledge management to improve the ability to formulate ideas in the organization
  • Leadership that directs the performance of structural software
