Professional Background

Nobumatsu Hirata, former country head of Toshiba Corporation China, graduated from Waseda University law school. He gained international experience with Toshiba in the US, in positions including the Head of International Business and the Head of the Asia-Pacific region. From June 2002, firstly in the position of Country Head and then as the Chairman and CEO of Toshiba Corporation China, Mr. Hirata engaged in risk management activities to combat the backlash of incidents such as severe anti-Japanese demonstrations and the outbreak of SARS. He also worked on the localization of Toshiba in China and aggressively pursued the issue of Corporate Social Responsibility there. In 2007 Toshiba China had grown to one of the largest foreign affiliated companies in China with 25,000 staff and annual sales of over 1 trillion yen. Mr. Hirata returned to Japan in January of that same year. He was honored with the most prestigious outstanding social contributions award in China and has since been honored with a variety of other awards.
